Share: Monday (Presidents' Day) Music

In honor of Presidents' Day, today's Monday Music post features songs for and to presidents.

Creating a Spotify playlist for Allison over the weekend, I stumbled across this Marshall Tucker Band song, originally released in 1981.

In this heart-wrenching song, Mason Jennings laments, "If I was the president, if I was that brave / I would take a shovel then dig each child their graves." Paste Magazine describes "The Field" as "just plain sad ... a desperate cry of a parent who has lost a [child] to war."

On a lighter note, I'll end the post with an upbeat song from the Mermaid Avenue project. Mermaid Avenue is a pair (soon to be a trio) of albums recorded by Billy Bragg and Wilco, who wrote and performed original music using Woody Guthrie's previously unheard lyrics. Here's a recording of the Guthrie/Bragg/Wilco song Christ for President.
